Placebo - Meds

Just got this album and it’s definitely going to be making it on my best of 2006 list. I know it’s pretty early to be saying stuff like this, but I’ve got a very soft spot for Placebo as they really made some brilliant music in the lulls between Smashing Pumpkin albums during the 90s.

The really nice thing about this album is that they’ve bought a few friends along for the ride, notably of course is Michael Stipe, whom I rate a great deal. I’ve been hearing a lot of people say they’re bored of REM, which I think is a terrible shame as that’s another band that has seriously given me HOURS of great music and inspired me greatly. So what happens when you mix these distinctly different voices together? I will say that it’s very weird sensation as Stipe is a lot more softer voice than Brian Molko and you definitely feel the jar when Brian’s part kicks in, however it’s a great little tune (’Broken Promise’ is the name of the track, might make it as the theme of my site lol).

However funnily enough my favourite tune at the moment is the final song, which is aptly called ‘A song to say goodbye’. As is always the case the first song you fall in love with on an album is usually the one that you can’t hear anymore because you’ve literally KILLED the track by playing it again and again and I assure you this is one of those situations.

It’s funny but I’ve been on a music buying binge right now. When I was in Greece I went to my favourite store (Metropolis) and they had this insane offer on the music there, 6.50 euros on 100s of albums. I did go a bit ape shit and O.Ded on Ben Harper and A Perfect Circle. Lots of great music coming out in the coming months, notably a new Pearl Jam album which I’m pretty excited about.

  1. You sound like you have the same taste in music as myself… Im a great maynard fan (tool and a perfect circle) but my first really favorite band was Pearl Jam - and since the binaural album I have completely dropped to hear anything good from them anymore… They topped on the Ten, Versus and Vitalogy albums… What I have heard from the new one was as terrible as one could expect - being in my shoes…

I would suggest you saved your money and got the Tool album released in a couple of weeks may 1st… :D

(I will try to find the placebo album, saw them live in 2000 or 2001 cant remember, but they were really cool)…

  2. I just wanted to say that you’ve got a beauty of a site here. It’s almost as good as your music taste :).

Anyways I cruised through and saw that you’re in the UK. That mean you’re probably like me and are not going to make the Coachella music festival (http://www.coachella.com) in California later this month.

It’s headlined by Tool (along with Depeche Mode, Massive Attack and others) and features Placebo and that other great electropop band - Ladytron.

  3. Jordan - Thanks dude, I’m actually off to California end of next month (but I wouldn’t have made it even then, but sounds cool).

Last good Tool album I got into was Lateralus, which I thought was very good…hang on I just noticed in your post, Massive Attack? Who from Massive Attack? What’s going on? I’m off to check it out :).

  4. Honestly, I’ve never been that big of a Tool fan. Good band, just not my thing.

About Massive Attack, they’re warming up the mainstage for Tool (but you’ve probably already found that out :). Far as I know though, it’s the whole group? This looks like it’s part of their big upcoming tour, and I don’t get the impression they’re breaking into DJ sets or anything like that…

  5. Hang on, no good albums from PJ since Vitalogy? What about No Code? I agree that Binaural isn’t that strong, but it’s a grower…

Think I’ll pick up the Placebo album, not listened to them in years, and hopefully they are back on form.

  6. On the PJ front, Yield is an AMAZING album as is Riot Act. I’ve come to the realisation that PJ have a good album then a bad one, except for the first two which were completely brilliant. No Code hasn’t got any classics I can think of, easily my least favourite PJ album.

  7. Discounting “Yield”, from great Pearl Jam albums, is just an absolute travesty.

“Follow the cops back home” on Meds is my current fav, mellow, but nothing as yet on this album reaches the depths of “Without you I’m nothing”.

I got myself a Tool ticket the other day, last saw them in Melbourne in 2001, 5 years in anticipation is going to make me combust.

The new Morrissey is worth checking out, as is the new Flaming Lips.

The new Tool track, is very, very good.

  8. No code: Sometimes, Hail Hail, Off He Goes, Habit.. sheesh.

But yeah OK, Yield is a better album. The real worry for me is how did I forget that!

Flaming Lips album is ace (nothing new there though), but Morrissey.. yeuch.

  9. I’ve got time for the old geezer, he does what he does very well.

Anyway, just dropped by to say that every single edition of the ‘Another Late Night’ series is brilliant.

  10. Great thread here. Being a huge PJ fan myself, I have to say that Riot Act is the only album of theirs I couldn’t get into (And while Yield is definitely more accessible, No Code is probably still me favorite). And the material I’ve heard from the new one so far has me very excited.

I was disappointed in the last Placebo album, but listening to a bit from this new one the other night peaked my curiosity. I may have to pick it up afterall.

And I know how those spending sprees go - $10 for tons of titles at Virgin in NYC. It was tough to limit to only half a dozen.

Those pesky shopping sprees. When’s the new album meant to come out officially?

  13. It comes out officially May 2nd. You can hear the first track on their Myspace page. Yes, they have a Myspace page.

A big Pumpkin’s fan, eh? Ever hear the song “Apathy’s Last Kiss”? One of my favorite’s of theirs, but incredibly rare (I think it was only on the b-side of the “Today” 45 - don’t think it’s ever been on CD).

I haven’t heard that one… but I went on Discogs.com and found that 45″ you were talking about. I’m not aware of a CD release but I didn’t look. I’ll have to keep watch on eBay :)

p.s. this is the same kyle. just used a different email and got a blog.
